Dickinson College
Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, was the first college chartered in the United States of America. The year was 1783 and Benjamin Rush, a prominent physician and revolutionary fighter had decided to continue the fight for a stronger nation, not through guns but through an educated citizenry. That same year, 1783, Rush signed the charter for Dickinson College with the vision to provide young people with a venue through which they can be trained for leadership as well as provided with the skills to make them useful and reliable members of society.
Today, Dickinson College stands in a 308-acre campus and is considered one of the leading liberal arts colleges in the United States. It offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in several major fields of study, as well as pre-professional courses in business, engineering, health, and law, to name some. Certificate programs for special courses like astronomy, creative writing, foreign languages and the like are also available.
Currently, there are 2,353 full-time students enrolled in Dickinson College with a total of 240 full-time faculty members to mentor them. The average number of students per class is 17 and the student-to-faculty ratio is 10 is to 1 thereby allowing teachers to focus on the individual needs of their students.
Total tuition and fees for academic year 2009 – 2010 is US$25,097 per semester and US$50,194 for the whole year. To assist students with the cost of tuition, the college extends financial aid through grants, campus employment, or loans. Merit scholarships for deserving students are also provided.
On-campus housing is available for students who want to avail themselves of the service. Freshmen reside in residence halls, sophomores and juniors in suites, and seniors in independent apartments.
