Eastern Mennonite University
Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) is a faith-based university founded in 1917. It is an educational institution that provides academic study, spiritual growth and personal development in the Anabaptist/Mennonite tradition and is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA. Its main campus located in Harrisonburg, Virginia houses the Eastern Mennonite Seminary. The EMU satellite campus can be found at Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Known for its self-sustaining and simple campus community living, it grows its own produce for dining hall consumption and maintains the environment-friendly Cedarwood residence hall. A full-time coordinator handles the university’s recycling efforts which has managed to gain national recognition. Recently added courses include green design and compost research applications as well as tracks in environmental sustainability and peace building.
Eastern Mennonite University offers undergraduate programs consisting of 37 majors, 35 minors, 4 teacher education programs/licensures, 2 pre-professional programs and 4 associate degrees. Graduate programs include MA in Conflict Transformation, MA in Counseling, MA in Education and Master of Business Administration. Its special programs consist of the Adult Degree Completion Program, Summer Peacebuilding Institute, Strategies for Trauma Awareness and Resilience, Community Learning Center and Intensive English Program, among others. Cross-cultural courses are likewise offered. The university also performs community services through preparatory music programs for children, sports camps, learning centers and soccer leagues.
Distance learning programs can be accessed through the university’s website. Online courses are broken down into 14 weekly units which are given designated completion period of one week. Each student is expected to put in at least 8 hours of study time consisting of reading, assignment, interaction, discussion, reflection and evaluation. EMU is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate and master’s degrees.
