Eastern University
Eastern University is a Christian educational institution of the arts and sciences. It was founded in 1925 as the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary. It was chartered as a four-year college in 1952 and adapted the name of Eastern College in 1972. It achieved university status in 2001. Since 2005, the university’s seminary has been renamed the Palmer Theological Seminary and is considered a separate institution.
Aside from Eastern University’s main campus in St. Davids, it also offers its educational programs in other campuses such as the Campolo College of Graduate and Professional Studies, Esperanza College, Templeton Honors College, Palmer Theological Seminary and in various other locations such as Washington, Harrisburg and Philadelphia. The main campus, together with the other educational sites of Eastern University, comprises its so-called “multiversity”.
The “multiversity” set-up of Eastern University serves at least 4,000 students enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, seminary as well as accelerated adult programs. Its mission is grounded on several core commitments consisting of excellence in scholarship and teaching, excellence in student formation, the whole gospel for the whole world, responsible leadership and stewardship, Christian witness and the commitment to justice and to community. The university is dedicated to enhancing the quality of society and the church through its formative role as an institution of learning.
Accreditation has been given to Eastern University by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the Council on Social Work Education for the Baccalaureate Major in Social Work, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education and the Association of Theological Schools in the US and Canada.
