Edinboro University of Pennsylvania

Chartered as the Edinboro Academy in 1856, Edinboro University of Pennsylvania opened its doors to its first batch of students in 1857. The funds used to build the school came from contributions provided by Edinboro’s farming community. The first building erected in the campus was the Academy Hall which still stands today although not currently used.

Going through its own share of name changes, Edinboro Academy became the State Normal School in 1861, the Edinboro State Teachers College in 1927, the Edinboro State College in 1960 and finally the Edinboro University in 1983. By virtue of legislation, all state colleges in Pennsylvania became universities. During the 1960s, there were two branch campuses existing in Warren and Shenango. At present, Edinboro has only two other campuses located in Meadville and Erie, aside from its main campus in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.
