Gratz College

Gratz College is a general college of Jewish studies located in Melrose Park, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1895, Gratz traces its beginnings to 1856 when banker Hyman Gratz and the Hebrew Education Society of Philadephia got together to raise money for a Hebrew teacher’s college. Gratz College opened in 1895 and became the source of extensive programs and information on every aspect of Jewish learning.

Through its four divisions: the School of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies, Netzky Division of Continuing Education, the Jewish Community High School and the Tuttleman Library, Gratz College pursues its mission to encourage a passion for learning of Jewish culture, tradition, religion, ethics and Hebrew language among its graduates and equips them with the professional skills to take on positions of leadership in the contemporary workplace.

Today, the college continues to award Bachelor’s degrees, Master’s degrees, teacher’s diplomas and specialized certificates on such topics as Holocaust studies, Jewish studies, Jewish education, Jewish music, and Jewish communal studies. It also offers various courses under its extensive continuing education program and maintains joint programs with other learning institutions like the University of Pennsylvania, Temple University, Drexel University, LaSalle University, Chestnut Hill College, and the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.
