Haverford College

Haverford College is a private, co-educational liberal arts college located in the quiet suburb of Haverford, Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1833 by members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), it holds the reputation of being the oldest college in the U.S. with Quaker roots. While it is now a non-denominational college, the influence of its earlier affiliation with the Quakers is still pretty much evident.

An inherently liberal arts college, everyone enrolled at Haverford is an undergraduate student pursuing either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science degree. All students of Haverford are required to live on campus. Since its inception, Haverford has chosen to keep its enrollment small to insure close student/faculty relationships. The college stands committed to excellence in academic training and to its goal to provide a rich liberal arts core foundation.

Tuition and fees for academic year 2009-2010 for full-time undergraduate students is US$51,165 broken down into full-year tuition at US$38,735, room and board at US$11,890, student activity fee of US$350, and orientation fee of US$190. This total cost does not include additional expenses for books and supplies, clothing, laundry, and recreation.

Because students are accepted at the college on the basis of their academic qualifications and not on their ability to pay the cost of attendance, there may be students who will find the cost of tuition too steep. In this case, they may apply for financial aid in the form of loans, grants and scholarships.

A residential college, Haverford encourages its students to live on campus and makes available to them a variety of housing options – from 4-person apartments to suites and singles to apartment style dwellings with kitchens and private baths.
