Philadelphia University

Philadelphia University, known by its nicknames PhilaU, PhillyU, PU and Textile, was established in 1884 with the primary goal of enhancing the American textile industry. Its original name was Philadelphia Textile School, changed to the Philadelphia Textile Institute, and Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science. Only relatively recently, in 1999, has it acquired its present name Philadelphia University. PU is situated in a 100-acre, park-like setting fifteen minutes away from Center City, Philadelphia. It is composed of 52 buildings, whose styles range from historic Victorian to urban contemporary. It also boasts of a large athletic and recreation center open to its students and faculty members.

Philadelphia University remains a leader in design, business and textiles but it has expanded its educational offerings and now is comprised of six schools: School of Architecture, School of Business Administration, School of Engineering and Textiles, School of Liberal Arts, and School of Design and Media. It offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in these fields. Faculty to student ratio is at 1:14.

A thing to note is PU’s Continuing and Professional Studies for the working adult. It is offered evenings and weekends, and a student can acquire a degree under any of its seven areas, including Behavioral and Health Sciences, Information Technology, and Organizational Leadership. A student may opt to take credit programs or non-credit personal enrichment courses. Non-credit programs include a certificate in Interior Decorating and an SAS Programming certificate for the pharmaceutical industry, which is a three month long non-credit course.

Tuition fees come to $27,428 a year, plus $4,540 board and $4,812 for a 19-Meal Premium plan.
