Sports at Temple University
The varsity teams at Temple are called the Owls. Temple University was one of the first schools to sponsor athletic programs for students. The football and basketball programs were started in 1894.
Teams compete in the NCAA Division 1-A and the Atlantic Ten Conference. The men’s and women’s basketball teams have performed very well over the years. The team has played in the NCAA tournament on several occasions. The women’s basketball team appeared in the NCAA tournament six times between 2002 and 2008.
