Allen University

Allen University is a private, non-profit, coed, African Methodist Episcopal institution. Located in Columbia, South Carolina, it is historically a African-American university. It was founded in 1870 with the purpose of providing education to freed African-American slaves.

Allen University has an open admission policy. Application requirements include a completed application form, a GED documentation or Official High School Transcript, 2 recommendations (for students with GPA below 2.0), SAT or ACT scores (for those applying for academic/athletic scholarships).

The university offers eight undergraduate degree programs and various majors. Some of these are: Biology, Business Administration, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Music, Religion and Social Science. All students are required to take general education core courses in the humanities, social sciences, laboratory sciences, and basic communications for a more solid and holistic foundation.

Online classes and online programs are also available for students. Courses currently available online include: Biology, Business, English, French, Health, Mathematics, Music, Religion, and Social Science. Weekend classes are also available.

As of 2007, Allen University had a total enrollment of 651 students and a student to teacher ratio of 22 to 1. Most students are full-time students live on-campus or nearby. Rooms are limited and are given out on a first come/reserved first served basis. Priority is given to freshman students. Roommate requests are granted although only if the request is reciprocal.

The tuition for full-time students is $5,442 per semester while part-time students (less than 12 hours per week) pay $450 per credit hour. Room and board is $2,620 per semester. Off campus students can avail of 5 meal and 10 meal plans for $500 and $1000 per semester respectively.
