Oglala Lakota College
Oglala Lakota College, located in Kyle, South Dakota, is a community college founded in 1971 by the Oglala leaders as part of their vision to provide education to their tribal members. One of the first tribally controlled colleges in the United States, Oglala Lakota College is governed by an Indian tribe through a governing body made up of Indian tribe members – the best people to determine the needs of the residents of the reservation in terms of higher education.
The college offers graduate degree programs on a wide range of subjects including applied science, business, early childhood and even maintains a continuing program and distance learning facilities. As its president, Thomas Shortbull, declared in Oglala Lakota College’s website, “As a result of having a college in the reservation, Lakota people are now employed in teaching, nursing, human services, business, computer, and vocational educational positions on the Pine Ridge reservation.” Campus life in Oglala Lakota College is alive and progressive with various clubs and organizations operated by the college. It has bookstores and several activity centers as well as an athletic center that organizes sports events.
Cost of tuition and fees per year for undergraduate per pupil funded student is US$13,846 while for undergraduate non-per pupil funded student the cost of attendance is US$14,278 per year. For graduate students enrolled in 12 units the cost of attendance is US$7,343 per year. These costs include tuition, fees, books, room and board, travel, and miscellaneous expenses. Financial aid is extended to students according to their requirements.
