East Tennessee State University

East Tennessee State University is located in Johnson City in the northeast corner of Tennessee. However, it has several extended regional campuses that can be found in Kingsport and Bristol. The university’s College of Medicine is situated at the nearby Mountain Home. The main campus can be found at the heart of the Southern Appalachians amidst the majestic scenery afforded by the Great Smokey Mountains, the Roan Mountain and the breathtaking forests of western North Carolina.

The university is comprised of six colleges and two schools: the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business and Technology, the College of Education, the College of Medicine, the College of Nursing, the College of Public and Allied Health, the School of Continuing Studies and the School of Graduate Studies. It is classified as a doctoral/ research university that provides a variety of courses and field experiences most often associated with larger universities. Online education is made possible through 5 bachelor’s degrees, 1 graduate certificate and more than 90 course tracks.

With its total student population of 11,624, 82% are undergraduate students. Full-time faculty is 670 with 79% of whom holding doctorate degrees. Most of the class sizes have 25 or less students although some classes have as much as 100. Tuition for in-state undergraduates is $ 250.00 per credit hour while out-of-state counterparts are charged $ 747.00 per credit hour.

The main campus occupies a 350-acre land housing more than 60 academic and administrative buildings. The College of Medicine occupies the Veterans Affair Campus which is about 31 acres, housing 10 academic and administrative buildings. Like most long-standing educational institutions, the university also went through several changes in name. From East Tennessee State Normal School in n1911, it became the East Tennessee Teachers College in 1925 and thereafter the State Teachers College, Johnson City in 1930. It was eventually named East State College in 1943 and achieved university status in 1963.
