Baylor College of Medicine is an academic medical center founded in 1900 as the University of Dallas Medical Department although no school of such name actually existed. It affiliated with Baylor University in 1903 to establish its legality as the Baylor University College of Medicine. It transferred from Dallas to Houston in 1943 to join the newly formed Texas Medical Center, a 1,000-acre complex of 46 independent institutions. The college gained its independence from the university by mutual agreement in 1969 and adopted its present name. It became one of their commitments to facilitate the increase in the number of physicians in Texas though its educational efforts.
The college’s curriculum is best described as innovative and its research, leading-edge. Tuition for state residents costs $ 6,550.00 while non-residents’ tuition is $ 19,650.00. These amounts are way lower than the average tuition both for private and public medical schools. Not included are the costs of supplies and other mandatory fees. Medical students would have a choice between the traditional Four-year Program and the Five-year Research Track program. Graduate students’ tuition fees and supplies are approximately $ 16.000.00. Other programs include the Nurse Anesthetic Program and the Physician Assistant Program which are both taken for 2 ½ years. Monthly room and board for all students is about $ 1,500.00
