Brigham Young University – BYU
Brigham Young University (BYU) was established in 1875 as Brigham Young Academy. It was named after the then president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Occupying just a little over one-acre of land, the academy conducted its educational programs with the generous infusion of scripture teachings as directed by Brigham Young himself. From its original location in what is now downtown Provo, it moved to a new facility in University Avenue, also at Provo in 1891. It officially changed its name to Brigham Young University in 1903 as its curriculum strengthened and its student population grew.
The Church Educational System of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is comprised of the main campus of Brigham Young University in Provo, BYU-Hawaii, BYU-Idaho, BYU-Jerusalem Center, BYU-Salt Lake City, LDS Business College and the Missionary Training Center. The whole system serves more than 1.2 million people in over 140 countries worldwide. Aside from these designated campuses, various educational programs are being offered in different parts of the world through seminaries, religious institutions, elementary and secondary schools.
The student body comes from all 50 states and at least 115 foreign countries. They are given a wider range of educational tracks through the university’s College of Education, Engineering and Technology, Fine Arts and Communication, Humanities, International Studies, Law, Life Sciences, Nursing, Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Religious Education, FHSS (Family, Home and Social Sciences), Management and Graduate Studies. BYU is especially known for its extensive language programs, outstanding sports programs and exceptional performing arts ensembles. It offers about 186 academic programs leading to bachelor’s degrees, 64 programs for master’s degrees, 25 programs for doctorates and 1 program for juris-doctorate. LDS students are charged a lower tuition than their non-LDS counterparts. All BYU undergraduates are required to live in housing facilities that are approved by the university.
