Dixie State College

The Dixie State College of Utah was established in 1911 by a community of Mormon settlers with a strong desire for learning. In fact, throughout the school’s history, the support of the community and its fight for the existence of the college is legendary. During the Great Depression when lack of funding support had caused many church academies to close down, the leaders of Dixie State College lobbied for it to be sponsored by the state of Utah. Although a bill was passed approving this decision, no appropriation was made due to the austere economic condition of the times. The community, whose members organized themselves into the Dixie Education Association, rallied their efforts and resources and for two years kept the college alive until appropriation was achieved.

Today, DSC proudly stands as a publicly funded institution offering associate degrees and certificate programs for the community as well as Bachelor’s Degrees for high demand fields of study. It also offers a core curriculum of foundational courses consistent with those offered by other four-year colleges. The college remains consistent with its mission to develop students that have clearly defined educational and life goals that will help them deal with the challenges of their chosen fields of endeavor.
