Castleton State College

Castleton State College, the oldest college in Vermont and the 18th in the nation, was founded on October 1787 by the General Assembly of the State of Vermont under a charter establishing the college originally as the Rutland County Grammar School.

Castleton offers more than 30 majors and minors in liberal arts and sciences as well as graduate programs in its 165-acre campus located in the village of Castleton, Vermont. Degrees conferred include A.A.; A.S.; B.A.; B.M.; B.S.; B.S.W.; and M.A.

Castleton State College has an undergraduate enrollment of 1800 full-time and 200 part-time students served by 89 full-time faculty members more than ninety percent of whom hold terminal degrees. Student to faculty ratio is 14:1 allowing for close mentoring by the faculty of the student.

Major and minor degree programs include Art, Athletic Training, Biology, Business Administration, Communication, Computer Information Systems, Criminal Justice, Education, Environmental Science, Exercise Science, Geology, Health, Literature, Geography, Economics, Mathematics, Music, Natural Sciences, Nursing, Philosophy, Physical Education, Politics, Psychology, Philosophy, Social Work, Science History, Sociology, Spanish, Sports Administration, Theatre Arts and Women’s Studies.
Graduate programs in Education, Teaching American History, Leadership, among others are conducted by ACT-II Castleton’s post-baccalaureate program for teaching licensure and by the Woodruff Institute for School Leadership.

Castleton hosts forty student clubs and organizations and twenty intercollegiate teams competing in the North Atlantic Conference of NCAA-Division III and in the Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association.

Undergraduate tuition and fees for 2009-2010 amount to $7,992 representing Vermont resident tuition; $17,232 non-resident tuition; $7,808 – room and board; $828 mandatory fees for all students; and $200 miscellaneous fees (first year only). Resident total costs $16,628; non-resident total amounts to $25,868. A.S. Nursing tuition for 2009-2010 costs $9,960 for Vermont residents and $19,008 for non-residents. Graduate tuition for 2009-2010 amounts to $9,984 for residents and $14,952 for non-residents.
