Johnson State College

From an elementary and secondary school established in 1828, Johnson State College (JSC) achieved its university status in 1962 to become a college that provides liberal arts education. In between these two landmark years, JSC was chartered as the Johnson Academy in 1832, became the Johnson Normal School in 1866 and the Johnson Teachers College in 1947. More than a change in name is the change in curriculum which now includes professional programs and the change in mission which widened in scope.

JSC is located at 337 College Hill, Johnson, Vermont. Johnson is a small college town having a classic New England atmosphere. The JSC campus is surrounded by high mountains and overlooks the Lamoille River. A nearby facility called the Vermont Studio Center holds numerous events while hosting renowned writers and artists. JSC occupies a 350-acre campus that houses 14 buildings.

Academic offerings of JSC include 25 bachelor’s, 3 master’s, 3 associate, 1 certificate and 11 teacher licensure programs. There are almost 2,000 students currently enrolled with JSC. The average class size is 17 while the student/faculty ratio is 19:1. The faculty is comprised of 53 full-time and 85 part-time members.

An estimated undergraduate expense for an academic year is $ 16,524.00 for in-state students and $ 25,961.00 for out-of-state students. Students enrolled in New England Regional Programs are charged $ 20,708.00. These amounts include tuition, fees, room and board.

Undergraduate programs are offered in the areas of Behavioral Sciences, Business and Economics, Education, Environmental and Health Sciences, Fine and Performing Arts, Humanities, Interdepartmental Programs, Writing and Literature, and Mathematics. Graduate programs are offered in MA Education, MA Counseling and MFA Fine Arts. Other programs are provided in Continuing Education, Teaching Licensure and External Degree. The External Degree Program facilitates the completion of bachelor’s degrees of adult learners with at least 60 college-level credits.
