Bluefield College
A group of Bluefield residents came to Virginia and appeared before a committee of the Baptist General Association with the intention of persuading the Association to build a new college in their area. The residents offered $ 75,000.00 and 65 acres of land to facilitate the realization of such college. The committee recommended the acceptance of the offer in 1919 which paved the way for the establishment of Bluefield College in the beautiful Appalachian Mountains in Southwestern Virginia in 1922.
Bluefield College is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to offer baccalaureate degrees in 22 majors of study. Its main campus is located in 3000 College Drive, Bluefield, Virginia while its two regional offices can be found at Roanoke and Richmond, also in Virginia. The college now occupies 82 acres of land and has 14 academic buildings.
The college’s academic divisions consist of the Adult Undergraduate Programs, Business, Christian Studies, Education, Exercise and Sports Science, Fine Arts, Literature, Language and Communications, Science and Mathematics and the Division of Social Science. Estimated annual education cost is $ 24,725.00 inclusive of tuition, fees, room and board. Students are charged the current credit hour fee for all credit hours over 18. Part-time students are charged $ 490.00 per credit hour.
The student/faculty ratio at Bluefield College is 12:1. There are 93 full-time and 62 part-time faculty members, 64% of whom hold doctorate degrees. The whole campus is technologically updated through its 10 computer labs, 11 SMART classrooms and Internet access in all residence halls. There is one computer for every four students. The Accelerated Degree Completion Program provides Saturday/online classes for $ 350.00 per credit hour. This program is especially designed for students who are unable to take traditional courses due to some limitation in time or physical presence.
