Eastern Virginia Medical School

Holding the honored position in American history as the only school of medicine to be founded by the local community at the grassroots level, Eastern Virginia Medical School was established mainly through the efforts of local citizens and the Virginia General Assembly who created the medical authority tasked to start the school. The first class opened in 1973 although fundraising efforts for the proposed medical school started in 1970. Aside from providing the much desired medical education opportunities to the community, the establishment of Eastern Virginia Medical School was able to attract medical specialist that provided basic services that were not previously available in the region.
