Hampden-Sydney College
Hampden-Sydney College, which is located in Richmond, Virginia is the 17th oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. It is also one of only three remaining all-male four-year liberal arts colleges in the country. Founded in 1775, the school’s mission is to “form good men and good citizens in an atmosphere of sound learning.” To achieve its mission, the college, which is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, adopts a very strict code of honor. Upon entering their freshman year, every student is made to pledge that he will not lie, cheat, steal, nor tolerate anyone who does. This pledge, which is made during a ceremony in school, is a pledge made for life and applies to students on and off the campus.
To prepare the students for the challenges they have to face in the pursuit of their education, each of them has to undergo a rigorous liberal arts training. In addition, they must also pass the Rhetoric Proficiency Exam which requires a passing grade in a purely grammar proficiency test and a three-hour essay that is graded for coherence, quality and style of argument as well as grammatical correctness.
Hampden-Sydney offers its students Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in a wide selection of major and minor subjects. The major requirement comes after the students have complied with all the core curriculum subjects required including the Rhetoric exam.
As a non-profit college, Hampden-Sydney tries to provide quality education at a reasonable cost. For academic year 2009-2010, tuition cost is US$29,518.
On-campus housing is available to students who want to avail of the service. A strict dorm assignment according to level, however, is imposed.
