Hollins University
Hollins University is a private, four-year institution of higher education for women located in Roanoke County, Virginia. Founded in 1842, it is one of the oldest universities for women in the United States.
Basically an undergraduate university that also offers graduate degree courses, Hollins has a strong liberal arts core curriculum. Successful graduates of Hollins agree that it is their comprehensive liberal arts education that has helped them and prepared them not just for their employment immediately after college but for the various career changes they needed to go through. It is likewise the liberal arts core curriculum that aids students to better appreciate and tackle their individual fields of specialization.
For its graduate program, Hollins offers degrees in dance, creative writing, children’s literature, liberal studies, playwriting, screenwriting and film studies, and teaching.
Currently, there are approximately 785 female students enrolled in Hollins taking up undergraduate courses. Since male students are only allowed in graduate school, there are 261 co-educational graduate students enrolled. Assisting these students in their quest for higher education are 73 fulltime and 35 part-time faculty members, 96% of whom hold a doctorate degree in their chosen field. With a student to faculty ratio of 10 to 1, the university guarantees that students are accorded the focus and attention they need to complete their courses.
Cost of tuition for academic year 2009-2010 is US$27,550 plus room and board of US$10,040. Other costs to be expected include fees at US$565, books at US$800, health insurance at US$600 and personal expenses of US$1,000 or an additional cost total of US$2,965.
To help students pay for their tuition and fees, the university extends financial aid in the form of loans, grants and scholarships to qualified students.
