Longwood University
Longwood University is a public, four-year liberal arts university located in Farmville, Virginia. Founded in 1839, Longwood is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the United States and one of the oldest public institutions for women. Initially established as the Farmville Female Seminary Association, it went through a series of name changes until it became a full-fledged university in 1954 in response to its growing student population. It became fully coeducational in 1976.
Longwood University offers its students a wide selection of majors, minors and concentrations. Its graduate programs include business, education, English, sociology and communication sciences. The university is divided into three academic colleges; namely, the Cook-Cole College of Arts & Sciences, College of Business & Economics, and College of Education & Human Services.
Around 4,700 students are enrolled at the university ably guided by fulltime faculty members, 82% of whom hold the highest degree in their chosen fields. With a student to faculty ratio of 18 to 1 and the average class size no more than 21, students are able to enjoy the focused instruction of a small, private college while paying the affordable tuition cost extended by a state-assisted university.
