Marine Corps University

The Marine Corps University (MCU) was established in 1989 by General Alfred M. Gray Jr. It reports directly to the United States Marine Corps Training and Education Command. Its forerunners were several Marine Corps schools established as early as 1920 to develop the Marine Barracks in Quantico into a great university. The university is located at 2076 South Street Quantico, Virginia.

Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award master’s degrees, the Marine Corps University is comprised of several component schools. These would include the Marine Corps War College, Command and Staff College, School of Advanced Warfighting plus the Compliance Certification and Quality Enhancement Plan. Other Schools and Programs of MCU are the Professional Development Division, Lejeun Leadership Institute, School of MAGTF Logistics, Expeditionary Warfare School, Commanders Program, Senior Leader Development Program and Enlisted PME.

MCU offers programs leading to Master’s Degrees in Strategic Studies, Operational Studies and Military Studies. The Distance Learning option is likewise offered through the Enlisted PME Programs. The facility however, provides accredited degree programs only to commissioned officers and not to enlisted marines.

Quantico, Virginia is located in Prince William County in the Washington Metropolitan area. Before the base was established, the land it presently occupies was owned by the Town of Quantico. At present, three sides of the area are surrounded by the Marine Corps Base Quantico while the Potomac River lies on the remaining side. A portion of the base is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The General Alfred M. Gray Marine Corps Research Center Archives and Libraries situated in the university premises provide the most comprehensive educational resource with technology that supports the requirements of Marines around the world.
