Mary Baldwin College
Mary Baldwin College is at the forefront of providing higher education to women. It was established in 1842, during a time when women’s education was seen as unconventional. Its primary mission is to provide undergraduate and graduate education to women as a private liberal arts college. Although its residential programs remain exclusive for women, it offers its non-residential programs and adult degree programs to both men and women.
The college’s main campus is located in Staunton, Virginia but it maintains nine regional centers. These include its Regional Centers in Charlottesville, Greenville-Emporia, Peninsula, Rappahannock, Richmond, Roanoke, South Boston, Weyers Cave and one located within its main campus, the Staunton Regional Center. These regional centers are mostly utilized for the college’s Adult Degree Program. The establishment of such centers also paved the way for the forging of partnerships between Mary Baldwin College and several community colleges.
Accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, it offers programs leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Education, Master of Letters and Master of Fine Arts. Also offered are Pre-Professional Programs, Teacher Licensure Programs and the Adult Degree Program.
The student body is comprised of about 803 undergraduate women in the residential college for women, 1,222 adult degree students and 158 graduate students. The college is especially known for its various traditions such as the Apple Day, Charter Day, Christmas Cheer and the Founders Day, among others. It has recently launched a new academic structure consisting of four Schools of Excellence. These include the Arts, Humanities and Renaissance Studies; Education, Health and Social Work; Social Sciences, Business and Global Studies; and Science.
