Bastyr University was founded in 1978 during a time when the political and social climate for natural medicine was not exactly encouraging. It was named after Dr. John Bartholomew Bastyr, who championed the cause of science-based natural medicine, while being a popular naturopathic physician and midwife based in Seattle. The beliefs of the founders were such that obstacles were overcome to demonstrate the role of science-based natural medicine in helping people.
