Eastern Washington University
The Eastern Washington University (EWU) was established in 1882 as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy. Its namesake, a wealthy transportation industrialist, made a generous contribution of $ 10,000.00 to make the Cheney citizens’ dream for an institute of higher learning in their community a reality. At about the same time that Washington achieved its statehood in 1889, the Academy became the State Normal School at Cheney. It became the Eastern Washington College of Education in 1937 when it was fully accredited to offer four-year degrees with numerous majors. The rapid growth in size and program offerings necessitated another change in name in 1961 to Eastern Washington State College. It finally achieved university status in 1977 as a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs became available.
EWU’s main campus is located in the City of Cheney in Washington, about 17 miles southwest of Spokane. The city boasts of a high quality of life with a friendly environment deemed suitable for raising a family. Recreational opportunities are very accessible from the campus location. EWU degree programs are also offered in various off-site locations including Bellevue, Everett, Kent, Seattle, Shoreline, Tacoma and Vancouver.
At present, EWU is a public, regional university that offers more than 100 study tracks in its numerous programs for master’s degrees, graduate certificates, graduate and doctoral courses. The university has been recognized as one of the driving forces behind the strength of the Inland Northwest region. A host of minority academic programs such as the Africana and Chicano Education Programs as well as the American Indian Studies and Women’s Studies Program signify the university’s commitment to campus diversification.
Online learning courses are designed for the varied needs of students who may be traditional high school graduates, professionals seeking career advancement, certification or endorsement and EWU students whether currently enrolled or returning. Several programs for international students are likewise offered such as the Sino-American Dual Degree Program which is based on providing credit and degree recognition between American and Chinese universities.
