Bethany College, West Virginia
Bethany College is a privately-supported liberal arts college founded in 1840 by Alexander Campbell. It occupies a 1,300-acre campus located at the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains in Bethany, West Virginia. It has been affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) from the time of its inception although students from any religious community are welcome to study at Bethany.
The town of Bethany is part of a designated historic district and has two National Historical Landmarks found in it specifically the home of Bethany College’s founder called the Alexander Campbell Mansion and the Old Main which is the campus masterpiece. Campbell provided the land and funds used for the original building. Bethany College was established first and foremost to prepare students become useful and responsible members of society in the context of Western religious tradition.
The college’s full-time enrollment totals 845 with an average class size of 14 students. Student/faculty ratio is 13:1. Ninety percent of faculty members hold terminal degrees for their particular field of knowledge and expertise. It offers degrees in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science in 21 departmental and 6 interdisciplinary majors and 33 minors. At least 76% of the student body comes from outside West Virginia representing 27 states and 16 countries.
