Bluefield State College
By an act of the West Virginia Legislature in 1895, the Bluefield State College was established as a black teachers college. It was integrated in 1954, and started offering comprehensive four-year programs by the 1960s in the fields of teacher education, arts and sciences and engineering technology. Two-year technical programs were eventually offered to respond to the needs of the local community.
Bluefield State College is known as a four-year, state-supported commuter college. It offers baccalaureate and associate degrees plus a wide variety of off-campus and distance learning courses. The college’s programs of study are conducted in its five campuses: the Bluefield Campus in Rock Street, Bluefield, the Beckley Campus in Dye Drive, Beckley, the Greenbier Campus in Church Street, Lewisburg, the Nicholas Campus in Webster Road, Summerville and the Welch Campus in Mount View Road, Welch, all of which are located in West Virginia. Five academic schools comprise Bluefield State College including the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Engineering Technology and Computer Science, the School of Business, the School of Nursing and Allied Health and the School of Education.
Tuition rates are the same in all five campuses. Tuition for residents is $ 192.00 per credit hour while non-residents are charged $ 375.00 per credit hour. All degree programs are offered in the Bluefield Campus while the other campuses have selective offerings of courses. Complete information as to the actual courses offered can be obtained from the Admission Office of the Bluefield Campus. Distance Learning Courses are offered online as well as tutorials for students taking courses through such medium. A non-tradition Regents Bachelor of Arts degree allows students to have access to baccalaureate degrees by applying the credits obtained in an associate degree. This is in keeping with its goal of making education possible to everyone who desires to learn and progress in their chosen career.
