Fairmont State University

Fairmont State University (FSU) today is a public institution of higher education located in Fairmont, West Virginia. Its history begins, however, in 1865 when it was first founded as the West Virginia Normal School, a private learning entity tasked to educate teachers. Eventually, the school’s name was changed to Fairmont State College and in 1974 its community college component was established. Fairmont State Community and Technical College, however, received independent accreditation in 2003.

To maximize resources, the two institutions were merged. Fairmont State College was renamed Fairmont State University to reflect its growing role in the development of students in West Virginia. Fairmont State Community and Technical College became Pierpont Community & Technical College.

In 2007, however, the two institutions were again required to undergo separate accreditation.

Today, FSU and Pierpont Community & Technical College continue to share the same 120-acre campus as partners in the delivery of education to its enormous student population. Together they present students with a choice of over 145 skill sets, and courses leading to associate, bachelor’s and graduate degrees. FSU offers degree programs through its College of Liberal Arts, College of Science and Technology, School of Business, School of Education, School of Fine Arts, School of Nursing, and Graduate Studies.

Total number of enrolled students in FSU is 4,600 and its student/faculty ratio is 17 to 1.
