Marshall University

Marshall University (MU) was established in 1837 as the Marshall Academy. It was named after John Marshall, a noted US Chief Justice. It attained university status in 1961 and has experienced tremendous growth and development since.

Accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools as an institution of higher learning, Marshall University has its main campus in Huntington, West Virginia. All its other programs have received additional accreditation from corresponding associations or commissions. Marshall University is a multi-campus public university that offers undergraduate and graduate programs that are deemed appropriate for the state and region.

The university uses the semester system which consists of the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Other educational opportunities are provided through study abroad programs and undergraduate research programs. Open house days and campus tours are great opportunities of getting to know what Marshall University has to offer. Online instruction is conducted through MUOnline to allow for more student access to programs, courses and services. Programs are offered through the university’s College of Business, College of Education and Human Services, College of Fine Arts, College of Information Technology and Engineering, College of Liberal Arts, College of Health Professions, College of Science, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Graduate College, Graduate School of Education and Professional Development, School of Extended Education, School of Medicine and the University College.

MU-School of Extended Education has at least four Regional Centers serving as Learning Resource Centers including the Larry Joe Harless Community Center, the Mid-Ohio Valley Center, the Southern Mountain Center and the Teays Valley Regional Center. These centers are intended to serve the educational needs of adult learners of West Virginia as well as the needs of traditional students living far from the MU main campus. MU has another campus in South Charleston which offers graduate courses.
