West Virginia University
West Virginia University (WVU), founded in 1867, is composed of one main campus and two sub-campuses. The main campus is popularly known as the Downtown Campus, and is located in Morgantown, WV. Its sub-campuses are the Evansdale campus and the Health Sciences Institute. It prides itself as being a “paradise for outdoors enthusiasts,” as it is located in a natural and picturesque setting. In fact, freshmen students are given the opportunity to participate in the Adventure WV, a unique wilderness orientation that aims to establish rapport among the new students and introduce them to the other outdoor recreational activities at WVU, among others.
WVU is classified as a research university, with a high degree of research activity within its campuses. These research endeavors include cancer study and prevention and search for alternative fuels.
WVU offers 185 degree programs within its fifteen colleges and schools, which include Arts and Sciences, Creative Arts, Engineering and Mineral Resources, and Medicine. Other notable, innovative majors are the nationally-recognized Forensic Science program, as well as its Biometric Systems program, of which WVU is the national academic leader for development (in collaboration with the FBI).
WVU’s Health Sciences offers various medical degrees in the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy. WVU’s Medical schools were ranked ninth in the US for rural medicine.
WVU offers Extended Learning Programs, which feature its Flexible Individualized Academic Program which allow students to design their own programs of study and course schedule. They may earn credit through internet and correspondence courses, among others. It also offers an RN to BSN program for registered nurses.
Tuition for undergraduate programs ranges from $213 to $245 per credit hour. For graduate programs the per-credit hour rate is from $300 to $620. Rates depend on the course.
