Marquette University is seen as the fulfillment of Rev. John Martin Henni’s dream for the establishment of a Catholic Jesuit College in Milwaukee. The then Marquette College opened its doors in 1881 to its first students as a small liberal arts school for men. The university was named after Rev. Jacques Marquette, S.J., a French missionary and explorer in North America.
Various undergraduate majors and minors are offered through the university’s Helen Way Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, College of Business Administration, J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, College of Engineering, College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, College of Education and Pre-professional Programs. Other options are given through graduate programs, professional studies, the Law School and School of Dentistry.
Graduate programs include Master of Arts in Public Service, Master in Dispute Resolution and Master in Leadership Studies. Certificate programs are offered in Law Enforcement Leadership and Management, Dispute Resolution and Leadership Studies. Online Graduate Certificate in Leadership Studies is likewise offered.
